In*************:

For all the tangents and baseless proclamations being made with the assumption that it’s ridiculous to even wonder the original question posed, it’s really not ridiculous at all and the simple minded approach to the question which leads one to conclude that of course fish cross from one to the other because there’s not actually any physical barrier there ignores some very real factors in determining what does and doesnt travel freely between the two distinct waters. Small critters which travel with the current most likely do not move from one to the other because their currents clash. The clashing currents are part of the cause for the separation in the first place, so it stands to reason that anything that is propelled by the currents which don’t mix would not readily migrate from one to the other. Also, fish are sensitive, to varying degrees depending on species among other factors, to the chemical makeup, density, temperature, and salinity of the water they live in. Many do not fair well in abrupt changes in any of these properties and conditions, so it’s plausible that some fish would be more apt to avoid subjecting themselves to an abrupt change in all of these changes in the water. One would think that food sources would be a drive to move from one to the other, but since most fish feed on smaller fish and other marine fauna, if the smallest amongst them moves primarily with the current, and the currents remain separate, keeping the water molecules separate without a chance to intermingle, the biological material carried by that current also doesn’t intermingle and remains in it’s passing current...thus the smallest food doesn’t move from one to the other so the fish which consume it don’t move from one to the other, and the larger fish which feed on those fish don’t follow them from one to the other, and so on. So, unless there’s a shortage of food up and down the food chain, many species have no reason to risk subjecting themselves to the shock of moving from one body of water to the other. But surely some species, particularly larger species, are hearty enough that the change doesn’t affect them so they likely can and do cross the line between the two bodies which does manage to deter the migration of others despite not having a true separate physical barrier. Unless, the leaders in one body or the other intend to build a wall at the expense of the other side to deter the free illegal immigration from one to the other allowing the worst occupants of the other side..the murderers and rapists, to have free access to their side. Yes, I’m talking about you, sharks....murderers. And you, dolphins...rapists.

Wa********:
When I was ten (1957-58) my father was stationed at the U.S. Naval base located on Eleuthera. We lived there a little over a year. Eleuthera is a long thin island with one main Highway running along its entire length. On one side the water was a tropical blue green, warm, and calm, with pink sand beaches. It was the typical Caribbean ocean and beach scene we all associate with tropical paradise islands. The water on the other side was dark blue, cold, and had very large waves crashing ashore. In fact, except for the rock formations, it could have been a coastline in Maine. Eleuthera is the most mountainous (for lack of a better term) of the Bahama Islands. The Atlantic side which we called the North Shore was bordered by tall cliffs punctuated by occasional beaches in small coves. The differences were stark, and it was obvious that these were two completely different bodies of water.

In more recent times, surfers have discovered Eleuthera and there is is a popular beach along the North Shore where surfers gather.
