1. He's checking for hypothermia. If he bleeds he doesn't have it, if he doesn't bleed it's a bad sign.
2. He's creating pain and therefore keeping himself awake and not as tired.

I've nearly drowned a few times.

When I was eight years old I couldn't swim. My foot got caught in a overgrown tree root and I rolled down a cliff into a river.

A few years later, I went back to that river and there was a strong current, causing me to be pulled into the water and I burst open my left knee on a rock.

Two years ago I went on vacation with my mother. We were on the beach and I was in the water when a high wave went over me and pulled me far into the water.

That same day we had already scheduled to go on a boat ride to the corals and when we returned to the sore, I was pulled under the boat with the current.

I still can't swim to this day and drowning is my biggest fear

I'm not so sure that a life jacket would've helped too much. Considering his friend apparently wanted that to happen because he didn't seem in much of a hurry to come back and get him. I think what we witnessed wasn't a situation caused by lack of a life jacket, but a murder.

Hey mark, I started living on a boat when I was five and stayed on there for five years, it's not as bad as you think because you are completely attached on to the boat when it is moving ANNND you have trustworthy people onboard with you who don't do whatever the hell that guy did.

i’m super late but i THINK he took off his shoes because they were weighing him down as they soaked up the water, he’s grabbing his feet because they’re numb from the cold and he’s trying to regain feeling in them, he’s rubbing his legs to try and warm them up and he pulled his fingernail off because if it bleeds, you don’t have hypothermia, but if it doesn’t bleed, you do have hypothermia. and the guy not turning around to save his friend is actually quite common, except most people don’t notice when someone falls of the boat, hence why they keep going (there’s a lot of noise around you out in the ocean such as wind and the waves, and you’re also struggling so even if you think you’re screaming loud and clear, it might be muffled from the water going in your mouth. also, it’s common for people to fall off and land directly next to the boat, which could also obscure the other people’s hearing since the boat is practically on top of you). for this game it was just part of the plot tho. sincerely, someone who nearly drowned to death at age 5 and now knows a lot about the ocean for safety reasons but doesn’t go near it (also for safety reasons).
