This movie is god awful. I tried to watch it to critique it and I couldn't even get 10 minutes through it. Light Yagami was the smartest student in the nation. Not some whiny delinquent. He had no empathy or need for love just manipulation. The first 10 minutes of the movie you see light acting like a fool and showing interest in a woman. Don't watch this movie unless you want your eyes to bleed

my main problem is Light's characterization
am i mad they americanized all the asian characters? yes, but characterization is more important than appearances, especially in a story like death note.
Light is a genius. he's the smartest in his class, and fucking outsmarts the world's best detective.
not only that, but Light is supposed to be PERFECT

Light is a perfect genius with a god complex who thinks he's doing good for innocent people, not an emo kid that wants to shoot up the school.

I can already hear all the kids in my school saying how they loved the anime and read all the manga after this comes out pretending they know everything like how they know everything about Attack on Titan. Like I told this girl that Eren and Mikasa should get together but her friend thought that was disgusting bc supposedly they were related.
I'm pretty much saying if this death note is a success then all your going to hear are kids taking as if they know everything.

I just hope that they don't turn Light into some romantic pansy. The real Light is a stone cold serial killer that thinks he's a god because he's a genius.

Light is not supposed to look like a "troublemaker". He is suppose to look like a smart perfect kid that is first in his class so no one would expect him to be a kira...

Ok right now, I don't even care about the casting anymore, as long as the actors play their characters well that's good enough.
But can we just talk about how I can't feel a single tinge of Death Note in this trailer? The people dramatically jumping off buildings, Misa smoking while making a pyramid in the cheerleading squad, Light making out with a girl in the dark, Ferris wheel falling ... I'm just saying, this doesn't feel like Death Note at all and just a typical American action movie.
The brilliant thing about Death Note is that the story doesn't need impressive elements like explosions and things falling for it to be EPIC. And that's why it's amazing! It keeps you off your seat the entire time by using the little details, the tensions in the mind game, the brilliant build up and resolve ... And these things, the very thing that makes Death Note unique are all stripped away in this trailer.
And I know this is just a trailer but I couldn't help thinking back to the recent release of the Japanese continuation of the Death Note live action 10 years ago. From the name "Light up the New WorLd" to the first glances of the characters, the short trailer ... Everything just feels so Death Note. I can't feel the same for this trailer.

The biggest problem with this "adaptation" is the fact that Light is being portrayed as this action movie hero, being chased by cops, hooking up with that girl, dangling off of a ferris wheel and possibly more. But that isn't who Light Yagami from the manga/anime is, he is a cold, calculated, emotionless sociopath that will use anybody and/or any means to achieve his goals. Light would never allow himself to even be near a position where he is being chased by a police car (because the whole "thing" about Light and death note is that he is always a few steps ahead), he wouldn't passionately kiss a girl like that (imo looks like there is going to be a romance sub-plot to appeal to a wider audience) unless it was for some kind of lie or act. since in the manga/anime he never cared for his "girlfriend" (can't remember her name) she was a tool just like everybody else. and the ferris wheel same thing as the cop car chase. This is the problem with any type of adaptation to the so called "big screen" (yes i know even though its netflix same point), the problem in case is that they dont try to just appeal to the fans ( i know i know you cant just live off the fans ) they try to appeal to the most casual of audiences and in doing so the characters end up being stereotypical and lose all meaning they had. just take a look at the most recent assassins creed movie adaptation. it was made for the most casual possible audience and in turn was boring and dissapointing.

I REALLY want to give this a chance but....they've got the FEELING of deathnote wrong, so far the trailer is mostly action. I don't know maybe it'll end up being a hit? I'll watch the movie before I decide anything but this doesn't look too good.

EDIT: I watched the deathnote movie, as a fan I'm kinda pissed that they changed so much, for one L has changed, he's not as....well...intuitive as he was in the original plus his death isn't as epic and didn't effect me as much as it did in the original, maybe they should spend more time on the character? Make me care? At least a little bit. Two Light....just....don't even get me started on Light. As a normal person just watching the movie, it was meh...it wasn't awful, I guess it was entertain...ish it was interestin...ish. I'll just say it isn't as bad as everyone says it is and some of the shots were decent to look at so...if you're a fan of the series you probably shouldn't watch it, but is your just curious give it a try. Tell me what you think of it in the comments. (God there's a fuck ton of dot-dot-dot. Sorry if it made it unreadable...) (heh not sorry...)
