This lady is genuine. She talks about how loving others gives her strength in life. You can see that when she remembers the happy moments of someone, she has the brightest smile on her face and with every downfall, she naturally cries with sorrow and fear in her eyes. Her emotions are so free, i feel i am emotionally dead comparing to her. She is tough to keep all those happy and sad memories so vividly in her head, and that capacity makes her endlessly drawing out the courage from others. I have lived ups and downs in my life, but my head is on autopilot to bury the emotions, i don't have half of her courage to confront my own emotions.

Yo**********:

who else didn't search for this but watched the whole video?

Sa****************:
"We don't want women like you."
I died inside

Tn****:

"I am the first to stand up for myself" thank you , I am gonna use this for my entire life

Ni*********:
The way that she goes from things like "lollipop planes" for "we don't want woman like you" is chilling

la******:

I love how her face automatically brightened whenever she thought of a happy memory.

Ch***************:
I also escaped a cult, I know what she's talking about. Good for her.

Ra************:

One of the most compelling TED talks I've watched in a while... stay with it until the end, it's beautiful. And... please know that for every Lilia there are THOUSANDS of women (and children) trapped in the cycles of violence, shame, and guilt - perpetrated by weak men who control them in organizations - in your own communities. It's a scourge on our societies.

Re******:
Damn, those happy moments interspersed between trauma. You're a very strong woman, and I hope God bless you more.

Th*****************:

wow I had just finished a series called save me which is about a girl who has a similar story and I am glad they both had an escape, but it was so disturbing to watch and to imagine that this cruelty exists. Now listening to this I am being reminded of the scenes. The whole damn series is something a person really experiences.. so sad and scary it must have been :(

Sh************:

No matter what freaking religion you follow this is not the way of god, just illegalize communities like these or atleast add a check or agent who comes by every month and monitors these society to see if they're doing right

Pr**************:

My own stomach dropped the second she said that her grandfather said "We don't want women like you."

Ka********:
I showed my Dad this. We are a family of Christians. He was working on a project so he wasn’t watching at the start, he was just listening to her story about her happy memories like the Celebration Party, and her first report, and when he heard “We don’t want women like you”, it caught his attention and he stopped working and looked up at the screen, in shock. This video saddened him, knowing how bad the teaching at Gloriavale is.
My parents tell me regularly that I am worth so much, because God created me and loves me, and they love me. They have never given me any doubt of my self-worth.

Na*************:
Spoiler alert: it actually was not heaven.

Mi*******:

When you weren't looking for this at all, but it's totally relatable, like it was dropped in your lap and you were meant to see it. I grew up in a large, religious, narcissistic, abusive, isolating family and ran away as a teenager. It wasn't quite a cult, but the abuse and isolation from other people was similar. I'm 37 now as of yesterday and I'm still traumatized. This woman is very strong and brave and I wish her a life of peace.

Sc**********:
Grandfather: “We don’t want women like you!”
Translation: We don’t want women like you to challenge our frail egos!

In*******:

She's emotional because when you've been brainwashed and abused, talking about it is difficult.

La*****:
As a Christian this makes me cringe. These "christians" will face judgement and it will not go well for them! Good for this speaker for leaving and finding herself!

Sa********:

Someone pls tell the lady with the tissue that WE APPRECIATE THAT

Ga*******:

I noticed how while she was sobbing, a woman tried to give her a handkerchief :)

Bl**********:

She has some demons in her up bringing

Ch***************:

It terrifies me how quick she goes from happy memories to sad memories because you know that is actually how they go in her mind

Ac**:
Aww people offering her tissues on stage, that’s so sweet

al**********:
How the heck could they call themselves Christians. That is NOT christianity. Its horrific that these things are out there and happening. Glad she got out of there.

Ha*********:

The cult is not christian. Jesus never taught that you were supposed to beat your children for silly things

Bo******:

To those saying she’s acting: she was a kid. Worse than once being involved in a cult, along the whole way she was also seeking love, attention, trust in the world, trying to find out the right values and her sense of self, and yet there’s so much shame... imagine one day after she grew up, when she suddenly realizes what they were actually doing when she interpreted those behaviours as love, and she actually participated in it... you don’t even know if you should feel ashamed or hurt, and if you just quit all those memories for good, then there goes your sense of self as well. Those cult people are truly walking devils.

Tz**************:
It's really sad to know that there are people like that out there. There are so many cults, and just plain abusers, in the world. What makes it worse is that some don't know what they're doing is wrong, and some believe that that is the way of God. Crazy cult people like the one's Tarawa talked about are one of the reasons people despise Christians and detach themselves so much from the Christian belief. I honestly don't blame them, if I was raised like her, I don't think I could look at Christians the same again. I really hope that the good Christians out there have the decency to show love like God wants us too, and to not abuse or judge others for their differences. Though I had no hand in the abuse of her friends and family, I feel horrible all the same.

Jo**********:
Wow this was hard to watch. I live and grew up in Christchurch and you see members of this cult around the city often, doing grocery shopping in the supermarkets or handing out little pamphlets in the mall. Every year they have a big concert where the public is invited and you can watch the members sing and dance and they make food for everyone, I've never been there but I remember in high school one of my teachers trying to organise a trip there and being denied by the school, I never understood why, I always thought they were happy from what I had heard. When all the allegations about abuse and blatant human rights violations came out I realised what was truly happening there. I really wish the NZ government did something about this, we are meant to be a society that respects human rights and every single person in our country but for whatever reason there is no intervention into this community. Some of the stories about this place are haunting...
