There is a (still very awesome) middle ground between sharp metal points and safety darts: plastic-point darts. They will stick in a regular cork or foam dartboard, through drywall, or even into a 2x4, yet do not have the sharp points found on metal darts. They could still easily puncture skin, but not as deeply as metal darts, and the real reason for avoiding metal ones is regulatory rather than safety anyway.
