Summary Comments : [ChrisFix] How to Replace an Alternator

Th*****************:
For those wondering why the alternator is grounded it is basically like a generator that creates an AC voltage, so it needs what is called a full bridge rectifier in order to make a DC voltage.
So for more current (Amps) to flow It will need that good ground connection in order to have proper current flow to the positive terminal of the battery.

Some people are scared of putting a higher amperage alternator in their system because it may fry some circuits, but in reality that is just not true. Even the battery doesn't care about charging current.
"The most basic rule is that you can charge at any current you like until the battery reaches 2.4 volts per cell at 25 deg. C (77 deg. F). That's the familiar 7.2v per 6v battery, or 14.4v for a 12v battery. Below this voltage, essentially 100% of the current goes into charging the battery, so there is negligible heating or gassing."

Just thought I'd drop some info hence I have seen many people thoroughly confused about the subject in the past. Great vid!

Crazy how mechanics charge a lot for alternator replacement. I did mine myself and took like 40 minutes

I love Chris Fix videos, I actually look forward to components on my car needing replacing now.

Chrisfix I'm also a kid and I love watching your vids

watching how easy this is shocks me. especially because of how much a shop will charge to just replace it. my friend got charged 600 bucks.

Ni********:
I'm pretty sure there was a Ford Focus alternator that I was changing and wanted to kill myself and to this day I have no idea how I managed to wiggle it out without losening motor mounts. It was like 5 years ago and I still remember it.

Ji*******:

Another great video, Chris. Thank you for uploading. People need to learn how their cars operate. It's smart ownership and saves a ton of money.

Fr*********:

Maybe an alternator rebuild video just for fun? :P

Xa*******:
Great video. I just did that same job on my 2004 explorer a couple months ago. About the only difference I found was that after removing the bolts, I discovered they only had to be loosened a few turns to get the alternator out as it just rested on the horizontal bolts and the bolt head against the face was enough to secure it on the bottom with 2 other bolts on top.

On another note, if you're buying the alternator from a local parts supplier, have them test the new alternator before bringing it home to install. Turned out the "new" one they had in stock was bad also and they had to order me one from another store.

Hey Chris, I hope that anti-seize wasn't an aluminum particle based product. Aluminum based anti-seize going into an aluminum threads will corrode and actually act as a lock tight product and will gaul the threads together. I learned that the hard way. I use Copper-Kote anti-seize because it works with all automotive hardware. (as long as its not a copper thread , which is extremely rare on modern vehicles. Great video!

AN**********:

Great video thank you so!

I have to change the alternator this weekend and my only concern is the alternator on the Scion it's located on the left side of the engine.

Hey Chris I just want to thank you for what you do with your help I was able to replace my alternator in my F150 with no problem. I did find out it was the alternator after watching one of your videos about testing the battery as well. You’ve just gotten another subscriber

You should do a podcast. I could listen to you talk for hours

Wonderfully done video. I now feel confident changing out my alternator. Thanks

Really informative, I had no idea it was that easy (in some cases)

You sir are an awesome man. Keep up the good work and smart talk. I follow you daily lol

ja**********:
THANK YOU SO FRICKING MUCH!!! :D :D :D :D :D

Gh********:

It's so hard on infinitis. Nissan engine design is so anti mechanic. I like BMW engines they are pretty easy to work on especially the oldest ones.

Ja***********:

this is one of my favorite videos. I watch a lot of your videos all over and over

Zo****:

Amazing to watch how professional and enthusiastic he has become.

Jo*********:
From my experience you may have the correct size alternator but it might not fit the belt. as so you just have to take off the old one and put it on the new one, also might be good to remove the whole belt and inspect it, mine shredded when i replaced it, thus making life more difficult. for any of those interested i did the fix on a 2003 ford E350 15 passenger van with more than 280,000 mile's on it.

Cr*******************:

Repair shops charge waaayyy too much for this.

ba*******:
Ha, alternators SHOULD be easy to replace, but then you work on a Suzuki XL-7/Grand Vitara that has easy bolts and all, but then there's that one Torx screw that strips which turns into a 4 hour job to remove the alternator otherwise.

au************:

If you have it available-drop the 3 alt. bracket bolts into some kerosene as you take them off. They will be shiny clean of any corrosion by the time you are ready to replace them. Always great vids Chris-500k will come sooner than you expect.

ko**********:
should have been called how to replace a turbo

Sh********:

You're so lucky, Chris, for having your alternator at the top. In my 1997 Mazda 626, the alternator is under the engine towards the back, right above the passenger side front axle. Had to drop the axle out just to take the alternator out since the alternator is too big to fit between all of the wires and the engine and the axle. Such a difficult task, especially seeing that it was the first time I've ever worked on my car by myself. But I'm glad I did it! I definitely see why mechanics charge so much for this job, especially on difficult cars like mine.
