1. First trick: They have pre-agreed codes for the type of the gum/jelly (if he eats it, it is a jelly bean, if he lets the judge eat it- it is a gum) and for the color - he says "mmm", "cool", key words etc.. => She gets the exact type and color of it. 2. Second trick: There is a built in scale in the bowl so the number of jelly beans that Mel B takes out can be easilly calculated by the scale inside (the weight of each jelly bean/gum must be the same). And then of course, some sound/signal/ or even someone off stage give her the number. 3. The board: It had been already written like this before the trick: - SIMON WILL PICK ..... - HEIDI WILL SELECT..... - MEL B WILL HAVE EXACTLY .... JELLY BEANS! PS WE HOPE THEY'LL RELEASE..... JELLY BEANS VERY SOON! (that is why they asked Howie's dream flavor of jelly bean, not his favourite one, to correspond with the word "release") The assistant can quickly fill in the blank when they asked the judges the questions and get the answers. The board is not a thin hard board, there must be some space behind for an assistant. The black board look like something that the assistant can roll it up and down or move forward/backward in there. Anw, this is still a well done trick

Impressive. Making up a system of what he is supposed to say and in what tone to tell her the amount must be very hard to memorise. The end part is just a far away prop so they get no credit for that. For me the magic broke right after the first "mind read" and i spent the rest of the time wondering what parts of his commentary was the number signals. Butt still impressive memory and execution.

This is a very nice act, and pulled off very well. BUT, if you watch this video carefully you will notice several things. First, notice the blackboard at the beginning. It is floating, and NOT on a stand. After she reveals the lower corner of the board, the board then levitates upwards into the ceiling. The audience doesn't see how far it goes, but seems that it disappears into the catwalk above and out of view of everyone. At the end of the act we see the blackboard again but it is on a stand this time, so it had to be rolled out. Only the TV viewing audience didn't see this. Once they reveal the words on the blackboard, an assistant covers it again with the drape. (Why recover it when we have already seen what is on it?)
As to the jellybeans and Mel B scooping them out into the glass, when Tommy asks Mel to take more and she says she is happy with the amount, he then pokes around in the bowl with the scoop, looking down INTO the bowl saying "So there's still some left for us, thank you so much". As others have stated, it's likely that there is a small scale in the bottom of the bowl that he is reading as he pokes around to the bottom. Obviously they know exactly how many jelly beans are in the bowl to begin with. They would not randomly pour an unknown amount into the bowl. And they know approximately how much each jelly bean weighs. So if there are 50 jellybeans to begin with, and Mel takes 22 (it appears to me that there are actually 21 with 6 yellow, 5 pink, 2 white, 1 purple, 4 orange and 3 red, BUT I may be counting 2 yellow beans as one on the left side of the tray) and if each bean weighs approximately 1 gram, Tommy will see that there are 28 grams left in the bowl. Simple math.....50 minus 28 equals 22.
How do they communicate? Seems there are many ways to do so from earbuds to vibration devices and tapping out morse code, to signal words (i.e. telling Heidi "Cool" when she picks the pink jellybean and for Simon's purple one Tommy says, "hmmmm") or someone off stage passing the info along to Amelie. The fact that we want to figure it out says to me that it is a great act, and done very well. These two are perfect for a Vegas show whether or not they win the million bucks. I love watching them and they have great showmanship!
