I love that outro song. It's very 90's.

Ma************:

Ho************:
That is a pretty cool phenomenon

Pl*******:
I've litterally never heard or seen these wtf kind of sorcery is going on in y'all's freezers?

No***************:

Cool video, outro jingle seemed like a poor fit for the channel.

Sc*********:
"Supernatural causes"
Ah yess the ghosts in my freezer are sending me messages

He********:
I've never seen this phenomenon happen...

MH*******:
That is just so cool.

Do******:
I have been watching Veritasium for several year and never once heard that outro.

EDIT: I just read the comments.

Ha*:
Apparently I'm the only one watching this video who has actually seen this happen in real life. My ice has been freezing like that quite a bit and I've always wondered what was causing it. I'd say my ice freezes with spikes around once a week. I guess the type of water use combined with the conditions in my freezer just happen to be right for this to happen. I actually even thought about sending you a video myself of this happening to me to see if you'd explain it, but I never got around to it so it's awesome to see that you made this video on your own. Thanks!

jo*******:

Lol I usually pause before the end card so I didn't expect that outro song (was it new?) xD

Anyway, very interesting video! I've never seen these spikes before... now I want to try making them (now that you explained the ideal conditions)! :P

“making the earth white, reflects more heat back into space”... lateral thought here... so to solve global warming, everyone needs to paint their roof white?

Ma******:

When he teaches more in four minutes than my teacher does in 1 year.

Li***********:
ive been alive 32 years making cube never had this happen once

Di************:

V E R I T A S I U M

to****:

This man just solved global warming... All we gotta do is paint the earth white :o

Me**************:

Experienced this for the very first time just last week. My little brother and I were racking our brains as to how it happened- and then I stumbled upon this video. Awesome!

Fo*****************:
In the nearly 22 years ive been alive I have NEVER had an ice cube do this to me

DR*:
"Neither way life would'nt be in earth"
me:Oh...
"And we would not be able to have ice spikes"
Me: NOOOOOO

wo******:

That outro jingle though :D

qu*****:
For me, I never got the spikes, just little bumps.

Co********:
Sorry, but I have to vote nay on that outtro jingle. It felt weird.

Da*********:
this has solved a mystery I wondered about since middle school. I knew that when materials heat up they expand. And when they lose heat the oppsite. So I didn't understand how come freezing a water bottle that is too full caused it to almost explode... Now I finally understand.

Ka*******:

This got real deep real fast

DC******:

I don’t know why but my freezer does this SO often.

ze*:
I guess the ice was watching it's amazing animated Japanese education series

Ni**********:

You should be on tv, your videos are fascinating and alot better than most shows that are already on tv! I'll watch a video then look at the clock and realize I've been watching your videos for 4 hours. I've done that a few times lol time flies when you're having fun :)

ik**********:
Lovin the new jingle
#newRingToneFound

Ea************:

I’m 37 and had never heard of this or seen it. But then three or four years ago I got a job at an office where this happen frequently in the ice cube tray in the freezer in the break room. Literally, would get several of these every time I refilled the ice cube tray. It was a financial company but being in IT I came from a science (chemistry) and technology background where I recognized this was special and really cool. I tried showing it to several coworkers and being as uninteresting and dead inside as most people often are in the finance industry, they would just shrug their shoulders at it and say “oh, weird.“ I was always glad that I got to experience this chemistry oddity in person!

Od****:
when i was 8 i did an exam for gifted children (all the class did) and they asked why water expand when freezing. i don’t remember what was my answer, i just remember i was shook because even in that age i knew the answer to lots of phenomena and couldn’t explain why it happens unlike all freezing liquids, and i was sad i’m not gifted because i don’t know the answer for things like that. until today (23) i didn’t know the answer for it, but still not satisfied with the explanation. i’m learning this semester in my physics degree thermo so i hope in a month from now i will have eventually an answer i will be satisfied about!
