Lo**************:

This is what is wrong with our media today. They care more about ratings then about truth. How can democracy survive in such a setup? They'll just say it's their business and they can do whatever they want, but I call it irresponsible journalism.

Te***:

It's really annoying to be part of the minority that has no interest in watching sensationalised shows on documentary channels.

Po***:
This just makes me incredibly sad...

AW****************:

Mermaids: The Body Found and the sequel were more entertaining than these even though they were also fake.

In*************:

This is great.

ES*******:
Remember when they showed a “mermaid?”

Ev*************:
I miss the Times’ when people didn’t lie to your face on tv

Al********:
Man this makes me sad, is this amazing world of crazy animals and unbelievable history not enough to hold our attention?

Ce*******:
You guys should do the fake documentary about Mermaids by Animal Planet, Like so that they can see it.

jo*************:
I have to agree with your argument of Megalodon being extinct. During its time (late Miocene-early Pleistocene), many of the whales it fed upon could retreat to the colder waters where their fat and blubber could properly insulate them. Megalodon, not having such means to block out the cold and deprived of its usual large food source, would be literally starved into extinction.

Ma**********:

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHOOHOH THAT ENDING SHOTS FIRED AT DISCOVERY CHANNEL. sav

Cr*********:
Its so annoying seeing kids saying "only 5% OF oUr oCeANs hVAE beEn diScoved so megalodon Is AliVe"

Ro************:

Yeah it really sucks, I use to love watching discovery/history. I'm really getting sick of the the fake documentaries they make as well and it's absurd how many people believe it. My Aunt swore up and down that mermaids were real after she saw it on discovery lmao.

Don't even get me started on the fucking science channel and never ending "How it's made" marathon.

Ma****:
I can't even watch Animal Planet, except for Treehouse Masters which still baffles me as to why it's on Animal Planet, but that channel was my childhood! Jeff Corwin and Steven Irwin were my idols!

No***************:
Anybody else miss when Discovery channel used to be about... well- discovery?

Ze********:
I also remembered discovery has an episode that made people think the government is trying to keep the existence of mermaids a secret.

Me*******:

YouTube is my Discovery channel. I learn new thing everyday!

Ch*********:

You too can help prevent the plague of Vocal Fry!  Be a solution and not a contributor to the issue!

Je**********:
I agree. Megalodon is a fossil species...that's FOSSIL...extinct for millions of years. Let's tell the truth. Sensationalism doesn't serve. Science and telling the truth is good enough....just tell the truth.

Sa*******:
Anyone remember that one fake documentary about mermaids that came out a few years ago? I remember watching that and deadass believing mermaids were real.

Ja*****:

Thank you for posting this @Vox

gr*******:

Thanks for bringing this to light, Discovery has become a joke in recent years. Everything is dramatized, music included in the background to make it appear more dangerous. I miss when they used to show informative videos and documentaries, to inform the viewer, not spew out bs that didn't happen.

BU*********:

megladon be like just chillin;killin

Ok***********:

When I heard "#1 nonfiction media company" I laughed out loud

Gr**********:
RIP Discovery, Animal Planet, and History channel. I knew ye well.

Li****************:

You're voice sounds really sarcastic

Ji********:
remember when they did mermaids the body found.......yeah it was pretty convincing too after I found it was fake and after that most of discovery channels documentaries about the unknown I just started assuming is fake as well and obviously you can see just how fake it is

ty******:

I am disappointed in the Discovery Channel.

La**********************:
When you watch "The Meg" and decide to make a video about it.

Cr***:
i wish i have time travel so i could see the megalodon............

Go*********:

Next thing you know they will have a special called. "Godzilla sightings!"

Da**************:

And let's not forget the fact that Megalodon was nowhere near a 100 foot long, but rather 50-60 feet at most, I was willing to give this mocumentary a pass as a fun makebelief "what if documentary", akin to Dragons A Fantasy Made Real, but the moment they started throwing actual facts about Megalodon out of the window for the sake of monstersizing it, ughhhhh.....

Da********:

I used to love the Discovery Channel. Now, especially after that fake mermaid documentary. I'm completely turned off to that channel. Once I see that main actor that I feel deliberately lied to me I get angry! I no longer watch the Discovery Channel.

ch*******:
Sad... Discovery used to be great. Now it stinks like s*(%*

Ar*******:
The History Channel is just as guilty!

An**********:
Discovery Channel is slowly turning into the History Channel.

FN*:

Idiocracy, here we come.

Ar*********:

Damn I thought it it was real when I saw it

Ar**********:
Megalodon is real, I know a person, who knows a person, who saw it on TV

Fa*************:

When I was a kid, we didn't have discovery channel and animal planet or national geographic and history channel, let alone BBC knowledge; and so, growing up I so looked forward to being able to watch these channels one day. Then we were able to. We finally got a good television subscription and I absolutely adored it, I still enjoy some of the channels now.

For a few months, I spent the majority of my free time watching documentaries with David Attenborough in them, and I watched a lot of programs about ancient Eqypt and egyptology. I obviously watched Mythbusters and all the stuff on National Geographic and Animal Planet...
But there was a major problem: programs like Pawn Stars started showing up all over History channel. That was when it started going downhill for me, that was when educational channels became reality channels. I honestly wouldn't mind a program about gold mining and prospecting... but then keep the drama out of it!!! Then when Ax Men started, I thought it could be an interesting show, see how the logging industry worked and all that... only to be met with more drama. Then I came to rely on the other educational channels.
But they soon followed suit. Discovery channel became less about learning and more about reality filled with drama.
Animal Planet aired Mermaids: The Body Found (and I watched it, I sure as hell didn't believe it but it was thought provoking enough to keep me occupied). Then came Shark of Darkness and Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives; these shows were interesting in their own right, but to give Submarine a bad name (that shark is a legend down here in South Africa, we divers don't talk much about him but we all know of him) and sensationalise the shit out of an 'accident' that didn't even happen? That's just taking it way too far. That kind of stuff is for Hollywood blockbusters, not what one would want on a channel that is devoted to science and knowledge.

The only educational channels I can watch nowadays without finding drama are National Geographic, NatGeo Wild and BBC Knowledge (and that last one is also starting to jump on the reality show bandwagon).

Ancient Aliens? It wasn't that bad, even if a little out there; in the end I became addicted to it. Big Giant Swords? I started watching that guy on youtube before he got the show, and I liked it that way. Mythbusters? Still good, but it feels a little different to the way it used to so I'm not that hooked on it anymore. How it Works and How it's Made? I didn't care that they aired countless episodes of those, I found them interesting and my family and I have a running joke regarding the constant puns the narrator uses; although admittedly, it was the kind of show we watched as a last resort, there was just so much of it that we got bored quickly. Bush Pilots? Love it. Bondi Vet? Love it. Gator Boys? Could be worse, but there aren't that many shows about guys who wrangle and wrestle crocodiles for a living so I enjoy it as much as I can.

What happened to these channels? We see when it all went wrong, but WHY did it all go wrong? Did someone interpret the view stats wrong? Did someone send an email asking for sensationalised mocumentaries and dramatic reality shows?
Cause it's all gone to shit.
I don't know about you guys but I'm starting to find Wikipedia to be more reliable than some of the things Animal Planet and Discovery Channel blurt out.
