Hu***********************:
The "Leaning Bar" makes my ass hurt just by looking at it.

Sc********:
jokes on you bench,

i sleep on the ground!

Pa*************:
I'll still accomplish falling asleep on them. No place is safe from my naps.

Je*****:

That "leaning bar" is making me uncomfortable just to look at.

sw*****:

Public spaces are not where homeless people should be.

Then where tf do they stay?

El****:
I’ve always needed a bench that I can’t sit on. Thanks leaning bar!

An******:

the cinematography goes so well with whatever the narrator is saying. Great video guys

Ge*******************:
It is a shame, how Urban planning, a discipline that affects all of our lives, is often so forgotten. Which is why I am so thankful, that Vox regularly showcases the best and the worst of it, as is with many other issues to do with modern life.

M:
how about using the money that’s being put towards designing these benches FOR HOMELESS SHELTERS

ph********:
“We need better benches”

NY: Hah,

we don’t do that here.

Jo**:
Executive: "Hey guys lets get leaning benches and uncomfortable armrests so that we don't have people loitering"
Employee: "But sir, shouldn't we focus more on lowering the rising number of homeless people in NY?"
Executive: "Yeah, that's what we're trying to do idiot! Off some of the homeless people. Oh, BTW lets put charging ports in subways."

Employee: "...but sir I thought you didn't want people to loiter...also that seems like a waste o-"
Executive: "And we should put in free WiFi!"
Employee: "Ok guys lets get this show on the road!"

Ra*******:

Those leaning bars are giving me anxiety from just looking at them

Ko**************:

Well if you told me that they were designed with discomfort in mind,
I Would Break Your Jaw.

ud**********:
The “leaning bar” is the most useless thing I’ve ever seen.

Ha**********:

NYC already has a problem with allowing people in wheel chairs from using the subway. Now they want to make it harder for people with canes or asthma?
Sometimes people literally just need to sit down to keep from falling down. I'm sure veterans with leg injuries are thrilled with the leaning bar.

Hy******:

This story makes me feel sad

wh**************:
Yo, judging by how often I see homeless people still sleeping soundly even on the "uncomfortable" benches in NYC, architects are underestimating their perseverance, ingenuity, and their ability to defy gravity. I'd bet everything that I will eventually find a homeless person making those leaning bars work as a bed, and I also can't wait to see it.

Al**************:
As a disabled person I can say that public spaces really aren't that accessible, it's very difficult to navigate the world now I am disabled and it gives me a lot of anxiety

Ky******:

My disabilities means that my joints get sore if I'm standing for too long. It means that I get tired easily. So errands are already pretty difficult for me, just because of the having to be up and walking for so long. Without proper benches I can take a break on if I need it.... I'd be even more stuck at home. It's bad enough on rainy days, because all of the benches are soaked, making them unusable.

Honestly that leaning bar is ridiculous. Wtf is the point of that?? People can already lean on the wall if they want to!! Also like... it assumes everyone is a certain height. What about short people? What about tall people?? It removes wall leaning space from them while being unusable for them because they can't reach it or they'd have to bend down awkwardly in a position that's more of a work out than a rest. What a waste of money.

Mr******:

"Can prevent loitering."
You know, because loitering is such a crime.

Be*******:

So New York hates homless people and skateboarders

Tr********:

stop spending on money benches and start spending money of situating the homeless.

Da*********:

This question and "why cartoon characters wear gloves" were keeping me up at night

Thanks vox for finally giving me closure

Ga******:
Simplified: Prevents homeless people from sleeping on benches.

Ph***:
British folks.... bus stop benches. When you're a child, they're the best thing ever and you feel so powerful when you're sitting on them. As soon as you grow up, they're slippery seats of hell. Placed so far close to the back of the shelter and angled at just the right level that they're neither seats or leaning posts

re**************:
In Poland, in the front of every grocery store is a brench which is olways full of hobos, usually they are pretty nice and you can hire them for small help.

It******:

I can already feel myself sliding off the leaning bar.

Ta*********:

What if there are no benches in the city at all

An****:

I live in Rome and the introduction of these benches has been slow, but the few that have been replaced with these are a nightmare. Public transport here entails such long wait times, so now I have to wait half an hour for the train while on my feet before waiting another eternity for the bus, where there never were any benches to begin with. In my experience there was never a big problem here with homeless people sleeping on these benches during actual business hours, they used them mainly when no one else was around to need them. Now they are forced to sleep on the floor. Doesn't make the city safer and definitely does not solve the homeless problem.
