I had always wondered about this and assumed they just used the field as some kind of green screen. Glad to see I was at aleast somewhat correct but it's a bit more complicated haha. Very interesting, thanks vox!

Thanks to Adam Savage for sending me here via his tweet.
I remember watching a special, on TV, about the tech and the company years ago. They mentioned that they had to laser measure each field because each field is different and that each field is actually curved. Meaning that the top of the field got higher, or lower, the closer you got to the center plain. The older the field, the less curved it is. Sometimes the curve was inverted from years of use.
They also did the tech for Basketball and had planned to show how high the players jumped. But they scraped that feature because most players only jumped about 6 inches off the floor. Showing it would become pointless fast.
