Summary Comments : [TEDx Talks] How To Trick Your Brain Into Falling Asleep | Jim Donovan | TEDxYoungstown

Ha*************:

Hello. I don’t think many people will see this, but I would like to share a couple tips that help me go to sleep much easier. I hope you attempt a few, if you wish, and thanks for your time:

1. Once you decide to go to sleep, commit. Do not go back on your phone, make sure it is silenced, turn down your brightness, and do not go back on it.

2. Try to not open your eyes at all, as light naturally helps the brain wake up, and personally it makes me feel sleepier.

3. Try having a darker room. It is scientifically proven that darker rooms lead to better sleep. I love having a very dark room but some people don’t.

4. This is the one tip I hope more people try. I put in my airpods, (or headphone would work), but anyways: I put in my airpods and choose a song with a few words or no words at all. I listen to this song on a very low volume - just enough to keep out all background noises. I encourage that this song has no words and is relatively simple because the brain, as mentioned in the video, likes to find patterns in music and relaxes to said patterns. Now, you may be wondering, what are some good songs to listen to? While I encourage you to find some on your own, I would like to provide some I enjoy a lot. “Sun King - Instrumental - The Beatles - 1 Hour Version”, “Gymnopédie No.1” performed by Rousseau, “Original Fortnite Menu/Theme Music - 1 hour” on Piano by Rousseau or the actual original song, “Claire De Lune”, and lastly “Avril 14th”. These songs are all slow, simple-ish, and very relaxing. When the song is over, either repeat it or put your earbud away and you will most likely by then pretty much be borderline sleeping. Also just wanted to mention that I heard the heart mimics the music you listen to, so this can be related.

I don’t typically comment on youtube, but I hope that I can atleast make one person’s night of sleep easier. Let me know if this helped you, have a good day!! :)

edit: Since a lot of people are already doing this and have some good recommendations, put your favorite sleeping sounds/music/etc below and maybe help someone out!! Someone below recommended the poly bridge sound track and it’s really great, and there are so many recommendations..

The trick, start at 8:10: tap on your legs like a slow metronome and breathe in and out on 4 counts, then slow that metronome down for some repetitions. It's like rocking yourself to sleep.

Gu*******:
What you are doing is mimicking the mother's heartbeat felt in the womb, and the slowing of the heartbeat as she rests and it is time for you to rest as a foetus as well. One of the primary reasons why people feel sleep deprived is the lack of possibility to sleep secure in the knowledge that people around one can be trusted - we are designed to live in tribes, groups, and the fact that we now are supposed to live in a relationship with one person (a wife) who is anyway constantly told by the media and her environs that she should be this, or be that, and can become litigious and turn at any point, upon some whim she has pushed into, leaves people insecure. Our entire society is upside down. Try sleeping with an older person (don't take that too literally) - someone very able, and someone you really trust, from the family, in the house, after an evening with them - the difference is wonderful.

C*:
10 years of never being able to sleep without help, where I have heavily relied on watching youtube or movies til I drop, or reading books to sleep, where even with these methods there's no assurance I'll be able to sleep. Important events that I needed sleep for but ended up sleeping very late because my mind won't let me. Sleep should be rest and not feel like heavy work.
I've tried so much methods, I've tried sleeping early but eventually got to sleep at 3 or 4 AM, I've tried not moving for 15 mins., music therapy, ASMR, doing a light activity before sleeping, drinking milk or water before sleep, keeping my mind at peace while eyes are shut, hypnosis videos which I've watched til dawn but never worked, and a whole lot that I can't even remember in this 10 years of sleep deprivation but to no avail. Even with my partner to cuddle I couldn't sleep without a youtube session to drop me. I already gave up trying at this point.
Then one day this video randomly appeared while watching Ted vids. For one night I dropped my reliance to watching youtube videos for sleep, I studied what he did then tried it. Next thing I knew, it's morning. I couldn't believe it worked so tried it again for 4 days straight and it still worked with no problems, I even woke up easily at 5AM at times on my own, without feeling groggy.
So to Jim Donovan, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, and for the 10 years of pain that I still couldn't believe you've cured. Because of you I can see myself having years of healthy sleep. And because of you...I can finally drop those late night cereals for good.
