Playtime Comments : [TED] Are China and the US doomed to conflict? | Kevin Rudd

12:37 For those of you wondering what he means. He is actually quoting the common Chinese saying "一个巴掌拍不响",which means "there cannot be a clap with only one hand". This is meant to express the idea that a conflict cannot happen when only one group is present. I thought that was pretty clever of him.

Top Comments : [TED] Are China and the US doomed to conflict? | Kevin Rudd

Th*********:
I liked Kevin when he was Prime Minister, far better than our current PM.

Mo**********:
This man should be treasured.

Ph********:

Well, aside from politics, I think that Betsy The Cow is adorable and we should all love her.

Gr***********:
in Chinese: US=美国=beautiful country, Germany=德国=merit country,UK=英国=hero country, france=法国=lawful country
the translations are from sound, but the words chosen have good meanings

Qu*************:

This is the best presentation about China that I have ever heard. Kevin Rudd, what you did in Australia for the first Australians was as credible as you are. Thank you.

Em*****:

Ah I know mandarin and my family is entirely Chinese 100%. I just realized that after saying out loud Mei Guo (America in Chinese, aka Beautiful country) it meant something beautiful. Cool.

Ri*************:

Shame not everyone has a wise mum. If world has more smart guy like Kevin, who can always see opinions from different perspectives, no war will happen.

Do*************:
Kevin is cool , He got backstabbed That was dirty

Ba*******:

Could never imagine Scott Morrison presenting in the same way. Unless it was a ted talk on how to be an ignominious

Tw*****:
Remember when we had a Prime Minister who was literate?

ba**********:

Fours years later:
Why yes, yes they are.

ee*******:
Me, 2015: This will never happen ... (thumbs down)

Trade war, mid 2018: Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected

Ca***********:

Ahh a new Cold War or hot one let’s find out

파트****:

I am a student of IR. I always felt understanding all these political mechanisms or frame works was not enough and also was missing something: understanding human nature or human heart. The knowledge of the very core of human beings completes my pursuits.

em*****************:

I completely agree, especially with the beginning. Kevin's a legend

Cy******:

I learn something every day, thax,

SB*******:

This talk goes into my heart. I hope this ideology can be spread into more hearts.

He******:
I could listen to this man speak for hours, one of the last true prime minister

da******:
Than you, [克文] for this good talk with a positive message. It has opened my eyes.

Xr*****:
“The position of Prussia in Germany will not be determined by its liberalism but by its power [...] Prussia must concentrate its strength and hold it for the favorable moment, which has already come and gone several times. Since the treaties of Vienna, our frontiers have been ill-designed for a healthy body politic. Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided—that was the great mistake of 1848 and 1849—but by iron and blood (Eisen und Blut).” -Otto Von Bismark

sound familiar?

Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided, but by iron and blood.

this reminds me a lot of the Hong Kong situation. everyone fears war, no one wants to fight a war that can end the world. but war may be the only way hong kong gets their freedom, and citing this video as another of my sources to shorthand the research ive done over the years thus far, the rise of power by China may put them in a crossroads with the US.

this is not favourable to the common people. such as history. i do not want to fight a war.

Da****:
克“kei” does mean “ to overcome “ in modern Chinese, but when it is used in the name, we usually use its classic meaning which is “can” or have the ability to do sth. so I guess your Chinese teacher give you the name 克文 with a wish that you would be able to write in Chinese. Well, it is a great and common wish in ancient times in China.

Ro****:

Thanks for your optimism Kevin, we voted for you, thank you for being able to speak a proper sentence and keep us out of recession, now we have gone from $150 Billion to $750 Billion debt under Liberals. Thank you for trying.

Ha************:
the conquerer knows what he is talking about, legend

Bo***:

This dude knows aboout China,I can see,I'm chinese,I'm impressed,However,as we can see, media group like NT,BBC sometime like a jerk, false news comes out, which is bad for both side to trust.

QY***:

Kevin inherited a great sense of British sense of humor, and successfully applied it in his understanding to international relation. It’s an art of dealing while showing off his smartness in politics. I really appreciate his style of speech.

ja*********:
Now that is (Real Talk)! put away your "wallets and sticks" and make a genuine effort for all mankind for we all live in the same circle of life!

Fa**********:
I'm a business owner and an English teacher. I've lived in China and even owned a business there. I'll say, I came into this video being very critical. Many times people speak about China but have no real idea of it.  Kevin though, understands both countries very well. He has made a great presentation and is very accurate in his statements.

Gu*****:

in 2020 thinking how our relationship with china be if kevin rudd was still prime minister

ji********:

It is so touching........As a chinese, I wish we could look more OUTWARD as a whole and to understand each other a little bit more 人类梦

ze*******:

Yeah, this was our prime minister at one point

Good times...

Bo******:
The problem is this:

Big world problems needs 10 or 15 years to achieve. China can draft a 30 year plan and stick to it. But USA can snap and u-turn everytime a new President comes aboard.

pi*****:

Can't wait to see Tony Abbotts TED talk on how to eat an onion without crying...

Ro*********:
The greatest speech I have watched on YouTube, compassion in the answer

Su*******:

I'm a Taiwanese grew up in Australia~ He's always been my favourite politician/PM, a very wise man

Be*****:
I watched this video the first time in class when i was studying abroad in Hong Kong in 2018, so happy to find this gem and nice gentleman on ted talk.
Now coming back again April 2020, so much have happened during the past 3 years: huawei ban, trade war, hong kong riot, coronavirus and more. It seems inevitably the relationship continues to go down the route of point of no return.

The prophecy of the greek story of the pellopenacian war would always repeat, because no matter how much human progress in technology and science, the hostle nature of humanity has never changed a single bit. This is why human race has never actually achieved a moment of peace in the world.

Ja******:
I met Kevin Rudd walking along a beach in Australia in 2010. I didnt know who he was until a few seconds before he said hello to me so no nerves had set in or anything, so we were just chatting away and he was very interested about my studies really nice guy. It took a few mins to realise what I got myself in the middle of as I noticed his security detail spaced out a hundred or so yards around him on the beach and then when we walked past a bar and everyone there instantly noticed him and started cheering manically

Ma********:
I appreciate that he mentioned how China really feels about the past 2 centuries. It's really important but often overlooked by the west. You can't believe how much of our textbooks is dedicated to telling the youth how did China suffer before and during in the World Wars, and teach them "let's not let those things happen ever again". Chinese people are very ashamed of their history of being the loser and being colonised.
It could be just the government teaching one generation after another to think in the same way, I don't know. But even if that is the case there's no real difference now since it worked so well, that feeling of shame is very genuine and it can become the driving force of so many things.
